Teach Me How to Pray by Sakina Carter
A poem
Teach Me How to Pray
A long list of things to do and then some
I’ll pray later; later never comes
Didn’t mean to spend the day on my phone to play
Lord, could you teach me how to pray?
I used to leave the praying for the older folks to handle
But it’s time now I take up the mantle
Parents and grandparents are getting old and gray
So Lord, just teach me how to pray.
Knees on the ground and eyes pressed shut
Lately, I’ve been feeling like I’m in a rut
My sun has gone dark, there’s not one ray,
But Lord, just teach me how to pray.
Troubles and tribulations hit me left and right
Demons wage war on my family day and night
But in your presence, I vowed to stay
So Lord, just teach me how to pray.
Once again, I bow to my knees
I desperately need you on days like these
I can’t always find the correct words to say
But Lord, teach me to pray.
Things aren’t always bad; sometimes they are great
Bank account, health, life- all in a beautiful state
And I forget a very important thing on such a day
Lord, remind me to always pray.
Mold me into the Christian you want me to be
Because in the end, I only want to be with thee
You are the potter, and I am the clay
So Lord, teach me how to pray.

Beautiful piece.
Dear Lord, teach me how to pray.....
